鰻屋の隣に住む男。飯時になると、隣の鰻屋から流れてくる鰻を焼く匂いで飯を食べていた。

ところがそれを知った鰻屋、月末に「鰻の嗅ぎ代」を請求しに乗り込んできた。「匂いは客寄せに使っているんだから、代金を支払え」というのがその理由。

観念した男は金を持って来たが、鰻屋の目の前で金をチャリン……。

「こっちは匂いしか使っとらん。そっちも音だけ取っておけ！」
